AEP will pay $4.6 billion to settle acid rain case
After eight years in legal battles AEP, American Electric Power, a major power company in Ohio agreed to pay $4.6 billion in effort to cut chemical emissions they have caused. The government has declared this to be the largest environmental settlement to date. The company was accused of spreading smog and acid rain that affected the Northeast as well as mid-Atlantic states, eating away at national landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, as well as mountain ranges, and bay areas. AEP has stated that it did not violate the Clean Air Act rules. AEP must also pay $15 million in addition for civil fines as well as $60 million in cleanup fees in the Shenandoah National Park and waterways in the Chesapeake Bay region.
Discussion Items:
Is this too high of a settlement? What would you consider an excessive settlement when it concerns our world and environment?
