According to the FMCSA, “Texting means manually entering alphanumeric text into, or reading text from, an electronic device.” This ban does not extend to hands-free devices, even those that are used to text or email. The ban is intended to reduce truck accidents caused by distracted commercial drivers.

As with most texting bans, this one almost seems to imply that hands-free devices are safe to use while driving. This belief, while reinforced through the new availability of myriad hands-free devices, is far from true. In fact, many studies, including a new one sponsored by AAA, have found that hands-free devices are just as, if not more dangerous than devices that require manual input.
