Takata airbag manufacturer liabilityThe Takata airbag scandal has claimed 11 lives and cost hundreds of millions of dollars in repair costs and legal settlements. But the scandal continues to broaden in scope, as a new lawsuit accuses five of the world's largest automakers of installing the airbags while knowing the danger they posed to drivers.

The lawsuit, filed at the end of February in federal court in Florida, claims that Ford, Nissan, Honda, BMW and Toyota were aware that Takata airbags could threaten the lives of drivers and passengers. You'll recall that Takata airbags were found to spray shrapnel upon deployment.

The filing cites internal documents from the automakers that, the suit claims, shows the companies were aware of how dangerous the airbags were.
