According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, sepsis, an infection of the blood stream, affects as many as 750,000 hospital patients every year. And, according to a new study presented at the annual meeting of the American Thoracic Society, sepsis may play a role in over 50 percent of all hospital deaths.
The study, conducted in part by the Kaiser Permanente Northern California division of research, analyzed data from 6.5 million hospitalization records.
