A new study conducted by St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto has found that teens who suffer traumatic brain injury are seven-times more likely to have consumed five or more energy drinks in the week leading up to their injury. The study, conducted on 10,000 students between the ages of 11 and 20, found that around 50% of all TBIs in this age range were sports related. The link between consumption of energy drinks among athletes and injuries related to their chosen sport is being considered for follow up.

Is there a link between energy drinks and TBI or simply between lifestyle choices that may link athletics with the consumption of sports beverages? While this question remains unanswered as of yet, it is well established that children who consume energy drinks are more likely to suffer from a variety of serious and even life-threatening injuries.
