According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, sepsis, an infection of the blood stream, affects as many as 750,000 hospital patients every year. And, according to a new study presented at the annual meeting of the American Thoracic Society, sepsis may play a role in over 50 percent of all hospital deaths.
The study, conducted in part by the Kaiser Permanente Northern California division of research, analyzed data from 6.5 million hospitalization records. Of those, 52 percent of patients who died while hospitalized had a blood infection. Researchers suggest many had this infection when admitted to the hospital, but did not receive necessary care to prevent complications.
According to the researchers involved in this study, sepsis is very expensive to treat and guidelines for treating less severe blood infections are not well-defined. However, even minor blood infections can be fatal.
